Ditching the Diet, New Year’s Edition

Time and time again, research shows that dieting sucks—with diets failing and a high link to both disordered eating and eating disorders. This new year, consider making a resolution to be extra compassionate with yourself. Your body is not a problem or something that needs to be ‘fixed.’ Your body is wise and has carried you through each and every day. With diet culture rhetoric on full blast over the next few weeks…or when you notice your panic rise as you critique your body…take a few deep breaths. Shift to practicing gratitude for what your body does for you.

Some examples:

I’m thankful that my arms can engulf my nieces and nephews.

I’m thankful that my legs help me pedal my bike on this new trail.

I’m thankful that my lungs know to fill with air even without conscious awareness.

Shifting from objectifying your body to focusing on functionality can help decrease the intensity of body hatred.

Shifting from criticism to compassion can help you feel more at home in your body.

May 2023 bring you home to your body.
